MassConfusion Books Rating: 91 (Most Excellent Book!!)

LuAnn Tyler is a beautiful single unwed mother of twenty caught in a life of poverty and a dim future when she is given an offer she can't refuse.  A mysterious man offers her a chance of a lifetime, win the one hundred million dollar national lottery on one condition - she must leave the United States and never return.  She grasps the opportunity in hopes of giving her daughter a better life but unfortunately upon doing so finds herself running for her life.

David Baldacci's third book is a more mature thriller than his previous efforts.  Personally I didn't like his previous books all that much, but Hollywood found Absolute Control, the author's first effort, worthy of a Clint Eastwood production.  I couldn't figure out exactly why they did so and heck I even found the movie kind of boring also.  Regardless, his writing has improved and I give this one fairly high marks.  All his books so far have featured a strong female heroine who is both beautiful and intelligent, a pleasant change.  David definitely has a strong feminist side as the heroine is usually saving the hero - rather than the other way around.  We indeed have arrived in the 90s.

The Winner, following the examples in Baldacci's previous novels, again features an incredibly contrived plotline.  For some reason though the author manages to present it to the reader in a fashion that rather than turns you off from the novel, draws you deeper into it.  Others disagree with me and find the plotline a major obstacle in enjoying the book.  Hey - it's a thriller, what do you expect - reality?

And remember - if it sounds too good to be true...
